Blackbird Hollow Neck Acoustics

Hi,

I make unusual hollow neck carbon guitars. We now have both steel-sting and nylon string models. For us carbon fiber is a means rather than an end which allows us to design the lightest and therefore most resonant small-body guitars in the world. The goal was to make pleasing acoustics that are for easy to travel with.

I expect heated feedback on account of the unconventional design but I assure you, the hollow neck, a 1mm top, body extension with off-center soundhole is how we get that big sound out of a small body. I personally hand assemble and set-up each and every one. We are based in San Francisco, drop me a line and you are welcome to stop by.

Interview with Arlo Guthrie

Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other, in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York in 1947. He is the eldest son of America's most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington's Disease.

He grew up surrounded by dancers and musicians: Pete Seeger, Ronnie Gilbert, Fred Hellerman and Lee Hays (The Weavers), Leadbelly, Cisco Houston, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, all of whom were significant influences on Arlo's musical career. Guthrie gave his first public performance at age 13 and quickly became involved in the music that was shaping the world during the 1960s.

A Slice of Heaven in Southern Ohio, The Fur Peace Ranch

Conceived in 1989 by Jorma & Vanessa Kaukonen, The Fur Peace Ranch is nestled in the rolling foothills of southeast Ohio.

In 1989, Jorma and Vanessa Kaukonen looked at a piece of land in Meigs and conceived what Jorma calls "a ranch that grows guitar players." Not a fantasy camp, but this would be a place where both budding and seasoned musicians could immerse themselves for several days, and emerge with renewed inspiration and tangible progress in their music.

Guitar Love

Well, today i did it,....... i went out and treated myself to a beautiful Taylor Acoustic 312ce electric/acoustic with cutaway.... solid sitka spruce top and solid back and sides in mahogony.. it just felt so right in my hands and i didnt feel a bit of question whether i should make the investment or not ... im very proud and happy that i did... it will be with me for a long time....ill get a pic of it up real soon.....

ESTABAN "WHAT A SCAM"

so-called “Guitar legend” Esteban was stripped of his legendary status this week when it was discovered that he is an entirely fictional character created specifically to sell pressboard guitars in infomercials.

Allan Holdsworth, guitar legend and president of “Real Guitar Legends For Truth” released a statement on Monday calling for the immediate cessation of all applications of the appellation “Guitar legend” to the television character known as “Esteban”. According to the statement, “Esteban is a fictional character created by L.A. session guitarist Dan Fernaueu for the express purpose of marketing a cheap, poorly constructed guitar-like instrument on the Home Shopping Channel.”

The scandal intensified when the Recording Academy revealed that claims that “Esteban” had won “several Grammys” were false.

These charges come on the heels of last month’s statement from the Musical Instrument Manufacturers Association that the “Esteban” guitar could not, in fact, be classified as an actual guitar due to the fact that it is constructed out of reclaimed materials such as discarded telephone directories and medical waste. The MIMA demanded that the instrument be classified as a toy

Some Advice Please!

Somebody I know's 5 year old child was given a very nice, miniture, solid top Gibson (steel string) acoustic guitar.

I've never had a student that young, so I was wondering if it would be easier on the tyke's fingers if he/she started with a nylon string.

It would be a shame for the kid to get rid of such a nice instrument.

Technique V/s Songs

Ive been taking lessons for a few months now, and though i have come a bit of a ways, there is still so much to practice and get into the steady flow of. I sometimes get discoureged and feel that its an endless road of making good sound, though its really enjoyable when i have the guitar in my hand,

Does anyone feel that its best as a very beginner to focus on the techical work like scales and progressions and strumming patterns as apposed to working on all this through songs... Something is telling me that i think i need to put the songs away and put all my focus on the other, like scales and fingerwork like that....

Please Listen To My Original Song - Your Opinions Matter To Me

This is a song I wrote in 1977 about an older me reflecting back on my youth and the good times we had centered around the music we listened to back then. This time I tried a capo on the 4th fret and an E harmonica. I can play this song with my eyes closed but the harmonica parts are totally improvised on the spot. Let me know what you think (and yes it does sound like a Neil Young song...lol...the 17 year old me who wrote this was heavily influenced!).

No Promises - Original song collaboration featuring 2 acoustics with different tunings

This is a collaboration on an original song. Howard C. Holbert is a BMI songwriter and approached me with some lyrics that needed music. I composed the acoustic guitar music for the lyrics and here is the final result. The song lyrics have a very deepfelt message about living and loving today in this moment because none of us ever know if we will have a tomorrow!

For this performance I overdubbed an additional guitar capoed up to the 8th fret (my Guild). In the video I am playing my HD28-VR dropped down two whole steps. This gave the sound of a virtual 12 string!

My ABBEY ROAD Crossing + acoustic cover of I'll get You

Something different from me here. In August of 2001 we were in London and visited the Abbey Road Studios (U2 was in London and rumor had it that the band was using the studio at the time)
This video was shot by my wife and she managed to capture my crossing Abbey Road when traffic was clear! The sound in the video is not very interesting so I paired it with my solo acoustic cover of an early Beatles song, I'll Get You and it just so happened my audio recording was the same length as my video clip!

Strumming Ahead...

Sometimes i feel as if im the only beginner out there, while im surrounded by so many proficient players... Yesturday, i was browsing my favorite music store and my friend who works there was tuning up a small bright purple glittery guitar for a young girl, whos parents where supporting her desire to learn and play, while their young boy was getting a Drum set...it always makes me feel good to see supportive parents who encourege there kids from early on to explore music.
Anyway, the Father is going to be teaching his Daughter to play, and i was blown away when he was playing her guitar... WOW, such sound, i suddenly felt a bit envious,as im only beginning on my first major scale and still working the chords into muscle memory.. i was feeling and asking myself, if i will ever get to that stage in my playing.... sometimes i can get ahead of myself and loose track of the momment and realize that im learning for pleasure and with a passion for the guitar, so i guess i should take times like these as inspirations and not allow myself to feel so down on my own beginning level....

Crosby Stills Nash & Young Cover - Country Girl (w/ harmonies)

I took my solo acoustic cover of Country Girl (from the Crosby Stills Nash & Young album Deja Vu) and added vocal harmonies where they belong. It made me realize that first of all one guy armed with only a guitar and one microphone can't ever hope to come remotely close to beautiful CSNY harmonies. They are masters of harmony and the best in the world so I could have easily just said forget it but I had to try anyway just to see what I could do with it. I gave it my best shot.
I carefully overdubbed about 4 vocal harmonies one at a time (a lot of work). Give it a listen and see what you think. A real tough song to cover vocally for sure!

Carbon Fiber Acoustic Guitars (Composite Acoustics)

Hi - This is Ellis Seal, the engineer that left Lockheed in 1998 to start Composite Acoustics. I placed this post on another forum and got a lot of questions, so I thought you guys might have interest as well.

And for the question everybody wants to know, do our guitars sound like wooden guitars? If you hear one blindfolded or on a recording (which many of you have and don't know it), you will not ever think that a Composite Acoustics guitar is not wood.

If you do side by side comparisons, our guitars do not sound exactly like wood - we typically have better string to string balance so the overall impression of the tone is slightly different - but tonal comparisons are a personal decision for which every individual will have a different opinion. Some will never consider that anything can compare with wood, however that overwhelming majority will say our guitars have great acoustic tone.

There will always be a place for great wooden acoustic guitars - there is also a rapidly growing place for carbon fiber guitars.

Nylon Strings.

Having a blast with my guitar lessons, ive had two so far and im amazed at my progress in just the two lessons, my teacher is really awesome, and highly encoureging... all my three guitars are steel strings and i have no problem tuning them up.
However, this weekend while at my sisters, she has a guitar with 3 steel strings and 3 nylon strings, i tried to tune it up because it was in desparate need of a good tuning, i had no problem with strings 4,5,6 as they are the steel ones, but strings 1,2,3 are nylon and would not tune up no matter what i did, i finally gave up, and i learned in the process that i dont like the feel of nylon strings.
was wondering if anyone knows if there is something unique in the tuning of nylong strings?

I'm playing an acoustic Takamine nylon string using effects from my Tascam digital 8 track recording deck. The awesome sax was recorded in Germany by my friend Charly Nice.

Welcome comments.

Also have just finished recording a demo of my latest song Blues in an Air Conditioned Room. Charly is again doing a sax track for me before I can post it. I wrote this song for a CD which is currently being recorded by some semi famous people from NZ, Australia and the US. That is, they asked me to write and submit it, which I did over the weekend. Doesn't mean they will definitely use it. But imho it has legs and will go somewhere whether they do or not. It has a good hook and potential. I recorded this using my dobro which hasn't had much playing until I was asked to write the blues song. Now it is dusted off and giving me more fun. The trouble with having many guitars is that they don't all get used all the time, then it is embarrassing when someone picks up the dusty one and it is out of tune.

First Lesson

Today i had my first Guitar lesson, man was it the best hour ive ever had ... he got me exploring the fret board and fingering some chords, and ive got alot of good home work to work on these next couple of weeks before my next lesson.....
I felt so good after, it was like my body was right on high, and i have to say that the tips of my left fingers are all tingly from pressing on the steel strings, but let me tell you, it feels good....
I wish i had taken it up a few years back, but i guess its good to just look forward and enjoy it in a real good way....

My guitar came with a fabric soft case. With the upcoming traveling I will be doing I want to get a hard case for it. Having no local resources, so I have to buy online. Any advice you can give is greatly appreciated.

Hitting that C...

So I have a feeling I already know what the answer will be, but here goes.

I have short, stubby little fingers. *sigh* Okay, I know my reach will improve with time, and I am working on it. Already getting some decent callouses going, and my reach has improved with daily practice. But....

I can't transition to "C" to save my life. I am going along, playing everything else in my stumbling noob way, but when it comes to going from anything to C, those three fingers just can't get there unless I stop and strain at it.

One website I read made it sound like C was really easy. Another aknowledged the long reach, and suggested practicing getting the 4th and 5th string fingers in place first, then the second string in time. My hubby places them in a kind of roll from 2nd to 4th to 5th. None of this information seems to help me.

I am open to suggestions. I imagine it is tough to related info on actually playing in writing, but I am at a loss. I drill it every single time I sit down, trying transitions into and out of C with different chords, and I feel like I have made no improvement in a couple weeks now. So lemmie know if you ave any tips!

Another Stretch In Iraq

I performed my latest song at Barosa last night in Auckland. It was fairly busy and very noisy so I suspect that not many people actually heard it. I was playing at an open mike and most of the music was loud, where my song was more of a ballad. Shame in some ways, but that's cool. Personally I'm really proud of the song.

Well, a some what sad day, as I sold my Yamaha 12 string today @ the store. I loved the sound, but the larger neck and string tension tweaked my tendonitis, so we had to part.

Five years together, all of them good. A bunch of jam sessions, studio appearances, numerous live shows in faithful service. A couple of months ago she even was on stage at the arena, when Nazareth came to town and needed a 12 for a tender ballad in front of thousands. She sounded great, looking graceful even with the store tag the guitar tech neglected to take off dangling form her headstock.

Goodbye old friend, I'll miss you. May you serve your new owner well.

Hey, folks: I've been playing right-handed guitars upside down for 34 years now. Anybody else doing that? What do you find to be most convenient playing this way? Most annoying? (For me, it's the inability to play a bass line easily, as well as having to resign myself to the fact that jazz chords are bascially OUT.)

Saddle Repair.....

So the saddle of my guitar started to pull away from its body. I fixed it using a marine epoxy and its doing quite well. A couple questions though, what glue is usually used? and how do You clamp down the saddle while the glue sets? Cheers

Dreadnaught Vs. Jumbo Style?

I've heard many different things regarding differences, preferences, etc. I at first thought there was no real substantial difference, but now I'm personally finding that dreadnaughts really are a little louder & have a bit more sustain. I don't really see the attraction for jumbo style acoustics (except many female guitarists have told me that the jumbo cutaway style is much more "boob-friendly" than the dreadnaught cutaway lol!") at all. Any thoughts?

Also I've always thought a miniture resonator guitar would be a great idea. You have the convenience of a miniture guitar, but you still have an instrument that projects really well. Neither Dobro or National have answered my queries regarding miniture guitars, custom orders in general etc . Assholes.

Anyway I guess I'll be patient and let you know if/when I hear from the fuckers.

My new guitar

Hey everyone! Stoked to find a Tribe about one of my greatest loves, acoustic guitar. I work at the local guitar store in Nelson B.C., and after 2 years of some fine axes passing through my hands, I finally made my choice.

My new axe is a Garrison G 20 cutaway, w/ the Fishman 4 pickup. It has a finished solid cedar top, mahogany neck, and birch sides and back. Other features are the Buzz Feiten tuning System and a crazy "Griffiths Active Bracing" system - an injection molded interior brace that is visable at the back of the guitar. It has a really unique voice, and just explodes with huge projection when played through a p.a. @ a club. At first I was a little sceptical about all the "tech", but so far I have 2 to admit it all works, despite it's unusual features.

It's also Canadian (insert joke here) built in Newfoundland, and i always like to shop "domestic". Almost settled on a Seagull mini jumbo, but the neck profile on the Garrison suited my wee hands better.

My God's Neck Is Twelve Frets Long And Six Strings Wide ...

I purchased my first drum kit when I was eleven. It was a battered five piece set of Ludwigs and every other month I redressed the tom,toms, bass drum and floor tom with a new psychedelic pattern of mac-tac.To my delight and to the delight of my family and friends, I was a natural at rhythmn and meter and my style attracted the attention of other players around school. I got in with a couple of garage bands and played and performed in one real band before I turned 20. Then I guess music just wasn't a priority for me anymore. I drifted, left my hometown up in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada and kind of just tripped around the country for a few years. Down the road some I met a girl and we had a baby. We left our cock-roach infested love nest on Vancouver's East Side and came to live in Niagara Falls so that my girlfriend could be close to and receive the support of her family while expecting her first child. It was upon arriving in Niagara Falls that I purchased my first guitar. It was an imitation sunburst 'hummingbird' dreadnought body, and the action was like butter and it had the most wonderful tone and 'drone'. I can't recall for the life of me what company made that guitar though. It was only with me a short while but I'll never forget her. The night I first brought her home I just stood her up in the corner and stared at her "fat", silver fret markers, even then trying to imagine just what the deal was between all those frets and strings. I remember how intimidating she looked and I recall thinking that I could never master such a daunting instrument. Today, I could not imagine life without the luxury of playing guitar. Despite the many guitars I've gone through since, that hummingbird dreadnought was the best purchase I ever made.

I purchased a Norman six string acoustic this year and I think that for the money ( $375.00) no Canadian could find a better acoustic guitar. They are hand made in a place called La Patrie, Quebec and with genuine Canadian spruce. Normans have very 'lush' tones and although they are not the 'prettiest' acoustics on the market they certainly do play beautifully. I wish to purchase a high end model guitar soon and again my choice will undoubtedly be a Norman guitar.

Singing and Playing

Second post - joined forum today - love it already. I've been playing for about 6 years, off and on, all on an Martin imitation "Sigma" acoustic. I taught myself while in college, (tabs online) inspired by licks from Kirk Hammet of Metallica. Nothing else Matters got me into it, and that's all I wanted to learn...until I actually learned my first few beats. Then I wanted to learn everything and anything that involved guitar!

So the reason for this post is...I want to start singing and playing. After you get pretty good, you can start playing some cool songs for a groups of friends - it's a rush when people recognize what your playing and can get into it...but it's so much more so when you can sing along with it.

There's a guy that plays at our local bar every Wednesday - he does mostly folk-rock stuff: Cat Stevens, Croce, Beatles..he throws in some Audio Slave and newer stuff from time to time. He rocks. It's amazing how after you learn to play guitar you listen to music in a new way. You really start paying attention to guitar in songs and you have a whole new level of respect for the performer. Even though I can play all the songs this guy at the bar plays, him being able to sing along while he plays brings it to a whole new level. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

So if anyone does sing, where do I even start? Tunes that are good to start with, tips for practicing, focusing when lyrics are not with beat, i.e. Dave Matthews songs. Help me out. Thanks

i just wondered what your story is and how you got back to playing again.

i am dealing with both. now its more so nerve damage and tendonitis. i have not played in 3 years because of this. every time i do it starts to hurt. so i am afraid to push it. its getting better this year i actually got my strength back...its just such a bummer to put down something totally when you have been totally immersed in it for over 10 years.(music over 20 i started when i was 4/5 so its like breathing to me. adding to my disdain for this injury) its in my left hand (fret brd) i thought about switching hands and buying a lefty....but i really miss my acoustic electric gibson with the cut out... and even with picking...my fingers are still learning to grip accurately and tightly. sometimes even the proper arch for a piano can bug me. bleakkkkkk

Hey folks, I'm loki- new here- but I have been lurking awhile.

I'll jump right in, and ask for some clarification and advice from the many knowledgable people here. I just bought a new Martin DXME- I picked it up for a phenomenal price- it had been slightly damaged and repaired- but the warmth, tone and playability of the guitar (and that price) made it too good to pass up! I played 25 different guitars in three different shops- this one was just beautiful. Of course, I was concerned about the effects the repair would have on it later- specifically since I live in Arizona- about the driest place in the freakin' world right now (no rain for about 150 days!). I bought one of those clip-on the string humidifers and I keep the guitar in the case.

The other day I pulled out the guitar and began to play- immediately noticing it had lost some of the warmth. It just felt different. I also suddenly noticed a crack spidering it way from one repaired spot on the bottom toward the sound hole. It wasn't a complete suprise- it was a repaired guitar. Gotta be the lack of humidity- this clip on thing ain't working very good! I refilled the humidifer (asskicking myself for not paying more attention- thing probably goes dry ten minutes after I fill it). Last night I pulled it out- and I had my baby back. All that warmth and goood goodness was there. So was the crack. Still there.
I know I am going to have to baby this guitar. What is everyone's concensus on guitar humidifiers- what do you all suggest? Even though the clip on is kinda a bitch to use, I'm thinking of using it in conjunction with a case humidifer. Is it going to take such diligence as to have to fill up the humidifers every single day?

I know I have kinda answered my own question- but, I just wanted to say hello and tell my story. And get all of your opinions on humidifers and how to baby a guitar that pays wonderfully but may need some TLC.

songwriter's symposium

some of my bandmates and I are playing tomorrow night 3/6/06 at Blake's in Berkeley. We are doing some acoustic arrangements of some songs we are working on. It is a great opportunity to get feedback from other musicians and they also record the performances.

I have yet to meet other bands here in east bay and would like to think this will be a good place to communicate and share. hope to see some of you there.

Modifying a Fishman pickup?

Hi everyone....

Recently purchased a RainSong, and although I dig the guitar, I'm not wild about the Fishman Prefix Plus-T pickup. The controling interface and built-in tuner are cool, but I just don't dig that rocking Piezo sound.

Wondering if it would work to put in a Seymour Duncan mag-mike and wire it into the controler, bypassing the piezo system. Any thoughts on if this could be done?

Speak to me of callouses

Okay, done a little online search and found a few resources, but figured y'all might have some good input!

How did you maintain your callouses when you first started? I am developing them through practice, as was planned, but now the surface of them is getting very rough and peeling.

I was avoiding moisturizing, as I read on forums where people avoid it like the plague as it can set back your callous-building, but I am worried if I don't moisturize at least a little, my callouses will become nasty cracked messes, which will be as painful as if I didn't have callouses at all.

Do tell!

My first time playing in front of an audience and I really muffed it! Couldn't get my fingers to move, could have played better if I was sitting on them. Just need a place to sound off. Hope someone is listening. Trial by Fire I guess. Hope everyone doesn't have to go thru this. Practice,Practice,Practice maybe next time I'll wear shades and get a seeing eye dog, the dog will play and I'll hold the donation cup. So everyone Thanks for listening!

What a different quality makes...

Hello all! I am a new member of this tribe (lurked a bit and joined it recently), and just picked up a guitar for the first time in this here 2006. A longtime promise to myself to learn it is now a reality, as I struggle with frets and sore fingertips and stretching my stubby little fingers for a simple Cmajor.

In my eagerness to get started (getting Guitar Hero for Christmas set it all in motion--funny, eh?), I swiped up a cheap guitar on Ebay. I picked the most intriguing color, paid no attention to brand or quality of any kind, and figured, "I just want to see if this is something I even want to do/invest in." Within a week I had my blue no-name guitar in hand.

The strings *hurt*. My hubby advised me (he was long ago gifted with a vintage electric he has fiddled with on and off over the years) that I should have waited to get a decent guitar, but that at this point, at least new strings would make a difference.

And he was right. I got myself some D'Addario silk n' steel, and instantly I was having an easier time playing. But still, this cheap guitar had a lovely buzz to it, and the full-sized body was giving my petite arm a rough go of it in the comfort department. But I was still determined to work at it with this cheap one, and "someday" I would get a better acoustic to replace it. Every day, two or three times a day, I would work on some simple chords and progressions. Ice the fingers, ache as I typed on my computer in my everyday work, file down my beautiful nails in order to get better contact with the strings-to-frets...only a couple weeks, but I was hooked in a big way.

When at the store purchasing the new strings, the man behind the counter had strolled me into the acoustics room and handed me a guitar. It was a small-body guitar, but will full size neck. It fit beautifully under my arm, and took little to no effort to get a beautiful sound. No buzzing. Lovely tone. I melted a little. When I got to my car I called my hubby immediately and told him I wanted to get that guitar. I knew we couldn't afford it that day, but I had high hopes that in the coming months...

But last night, he bought it for me. I took him to the store to show it to him, and he proffered it as an early Valentine's gift. He had planned to get it in February, but, as he said, "why wait a month when you could be playing it now?"

I HAD NO IDEA what a different a quality guitar makes. You don't have to spend a fortune, but a little attention to the recommendations here and other places online, and you can have yourself a sweet little guitar that will make playing not only sound better, but *feel* better.

My lovely little Cort Earth 72 is on its new stand right next to the fireplace. Her name is Marilyn, because she is blonde, curvy, and has a little beauty mark (tiny wood knot) on her "face". I shoulda listened when I was told a decent guitar would make playing easier, but luckily, the nature of "cheap" guitars is that I am not out much money. I am keeping Old Blue (the first guitar) as a back-up guitar, and for friends to play when they visit. Marilyn is aaaalll mine, and I am so grateful to my husband for gifting me such a beauty.

Moral of the story: don't cheap out on your guitar. Spend a little more, get a LOT more.

Thanks for all the great advice and experiences that everyone shared with me. I feel better and can take solace that I'm not the only one. I'll continue to perform and keep on keeping on! If someone out there is about to perform thier first gig. "Relax and Enjoy" my new motto! Hope this gave everyone a couple of good laughs and brought back some memories. I know I'll remember this. I need a good cheap acoustic guitar

for like 100-200 bucks, within that range. What can I get with that? Suggestions? I like to play blues, rockabilly, country, soft rock, and even island music on acoustic. So having said that, what kind of instrument could afford me to continue playing?

recording at home...

Does anyone here use digital recording to make their demos. I am looking online at musiciansfriend.com and i am overwhelmed by the choices. I am broke-ish (a musician with little money...there is a surprise) but I want something that will do as good job recording my guitar, be easy to use (I dont like recording, love playing, hate recording), and able to travel well.

Who uses what here? Any raves or pans?

Guitar Appraisal

I just got loaned on an indefinite basis a 1911 Martin. It's a fucking SWEET sounding guitar with loads of character. Someone in its past gouged out a hole for a pickup and someone LONG ago scratched "Say it...?" on its face. Which, as a musician with a message, I find serendipitously delicious.

Anyway, I'm urging my friend to get renter's insurance. Any suggestions on estimating the value for said purposes?

Anyone Actually Heard of Estaban - the QVC guitar guy?

A bunch of us on the Guitar Tribe were wondering who is this Estaban guy who sells acoustic guitars on QVC. Supposedly he used to be some great player - taught by Segovia - until the guy got hit by a drunk driver, lost use of BOTH hands (damn...) then ten years later regained use of his hands and is selling guitars on QVC.

Anyone actually ever heard of him outside of QVC?

12 string drone

Curious if anyone has found a slick way to dampen the low string drones when recording a 12 string. It is being used as a very fast rhythm guitar for some Irishy music, multi-layered at that. I'm stacking 4 tracks of it. The low E and A get into a sympathetic vibration that builds somewhat annoyingly. EQ notching hasn't worked out so far. I don't want to kill the strings, just keep them from overpowering the mix.
