Lately I spend most of my guitar time on Irish material, so I will mention a few other names to check out, who may not be familiar to this tribe: Tony Cuffe (Scottish singer, guitarist, and harper - but sadly, now deceased) John Doyle (singer of songs and MASTER guitarist - very much alive and well, transplanted from Ireland to Asheville NC) Robbie O'Connell (songwriter, singer, guitarist - came here from Ireland many years ago, living in Rhode Island) Ian Melrose (guitarist, singer, low whistle -1/2 of the duo Kelpie, lives someplace in the UK I think) There are of course a boatload of excellent Irish guitarists who specialize in tunes (not songs, which to me have lyrics), in either flatpick, fingerstyle, or accompaniment modes. I should also mention Kerstin Blodig (the other 1/2 of Kelpie), who solos in contemporary Norweigan acoustic folk (singer, Irish bouzouki and guitar with strong Hedges overtones here). One thing that's nice is, after you learn to play a little music, and learn how to analyze what you hear, songs or musicians come along that blow you away so much that you can't even begin to try and understand what they're doing. "Can't find my way home", OK, not a solo acoustic thing, and Ginger is sort of fooling around in the background, but still pretty awesome. "Andy Warhol", David Bowie, off "Hunky-Dory". Not really a great song, but such a cool riff, it's probably half the reason I picked up acoustic in the first place. Pierre Bensusan or Michael Hedges. Both are so good, it's just ludicrous really. I prefer the instrumental stuff. Most of the California Guitar Trio's originals I like, their joke songs and classical covers I can do without, "Punta Patri" and "Scramble" are particular favorites. Bill Frisell seems like he'd be a kickass acoustic soloist, I just can't seem to find anything he's DONE that is acoustic and solo.
