Planning on buying a new acoustic-electric, and cannot decide between an ovation or takamine. I currently own a takamine acoustic and love it, but I also enjoy a good ovation. Just looking for some persuation either way.

Re: In a jam
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 8:35 AMMy 2 cents:
Ovations and Applause guitars - and I think it is because they have a rounded back I dunno - are REALLY on the bright side. Lots of high-end.
They are nice instruments but I could never get over how bright the tone can be on their guitars.
Takamines have NEVER done me wrong. Not at any price point. -

Re: In a jam
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 11:56 AMI tend to agree. Like I said, I love the Takamine that I have. It's an acoustic, and I have a sound hole pickup that I use with it. I just want a higher quality guitar, and I am leaning more towards another Takamine. -

Re: In a jam
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 6:48 PMOvations are prone to front face cracking and splits. Having a plastic back, the sound board is restricted where it expands or contracts with humidity or dryness.
9 out of 10 Ovations die in this manner, so be wary.... -

Re: In a jam
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 8:14 PMI'd go for the same style you have if it fits your hands well. The best sound you're going to get is from a guitar that your hands feel comfortable with. Of course the same brand would make Bruce Springsteen happy also. -

Re: In a jam
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 9:42 PMHey -
This is one of those decisions in life that you can re-do if it doesn't work out, yes?
I don't disagree w/ anything previously said - -but I will add this: I recently picked up a Breedlove acoustic-electric AJ250/SM - this is a jumbo with a mild cutaway, Fishman electronics, built for Breedlove in Korea - and for the $$$ I couldn't be happier. The Taks I have played in music stores generally are not as nice, often for similar $$$, and you can spend rather a lot on an Ovation. The latter might be better for feedback issues, just a guess, though.
I own several guitars including a custom shop Breedlove and a coupla upscale Taylors, but this thing really sounds and plays great. It actually sounds better plugged in, which is wierd to me.
I got this specifically for Irish music accompaniment - it is working fine, and I don't have to be afraid to take it to the pub....
Good luck with your decision

Re: In a jam
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 9:57 PMget any guitar you like.....but don't wast time on the ovation
(just my personal opinion, the shrill tone of those things makes me cringe)... if ya really love the ovation then go for it
breedloves are nice, i've played a few larrivee's that i was way impressed with for the dough.
"when the top starts to separate from the plastic back you can always use it as a salad bowl."
heh heh heh, sorry couldn't help it.

Re: In a jam
Sat, March 3, 2007 - 1:07 PMThe only Ovation I ever owned cracked at the top of the neck. They also feel annoying if you sit to play them. -

Re: In a jam
Mon, March 5, 2007 - 7:31 AMThanks for all the input guys. One of my co-workers has an ovation, so I played it and it 's tone was decent, but I don't like it. Mostly just the janky rounded plastic back of it just turned me off. Too cumbersome. I'm going to play a lot of guitars this weekend, and hopefully I"ll get an idea of what i'm really looking for. I'll update everyone when I make the purchase. -

Thu, March 8, 2007 - 6:17 AMAnyone have, or played a Taylor big baby? I'm assuming because it's a Taylor it's an amazing guitar, however, the price seems just a little too good to be true. Just looking for some insight. I'm gonna go play it this weekend, and see what I think. Anybody... -

Re: In a jam
Thu, March 8, 2007 - 7:05 AMA friend of mine has one, and it is a good starter guitar. and sounds nice. I believe the sides are laminate, and the one thing i personally don't like about it is there are two screws in the neck going right into the sound board.
what I would say is save up some $ and get a 100 or 200 series. I have a 214 and love it to death. -

Thu, March 8, 2007 - 7:34 AMOkay I apologize for 1. being a wiseacre and 2. going off-topic a bit but I jus have to point out that:
In a "jam" is a terrific pun! - intended or not!

Thu, March 8, 2007 - 12:37 PMTaylor Big Baby:
Just played it; didn't like it. Big tone for a small guitar, but just not enough. It's just not quite what I want. Did play a couple of Martins and a Breedlove I was pretty impressed with. -

Tue, March 13, 2007 - 12:18 PMWell guys...I bought the Takamine, and I love it. The "EG531SSC" acoustic-electric.The Taylors I played were, of coarse, amazing, but out of my budget unfortunately. I'm sure many of you know how that goes. So far I'm extremely happy with it. I'll post a pick of it on my profile soon. -

Tue, March 13, 2007 - 1:50 PMgood for you xxVillianxx!!
(just don't ruin the moment by playing "Stairway To Heaven" on it or some shit) -

Re: In a jam
Tue, March 13, 2007 - 2:16 PMI like to play the guitar part on "Stairway" but sing the words to the Gilligan's Island theme song. -

seeing as Led Zeppelin has sued Little Roger and the Goosebumps back to the Stone Age to prevent that parody from being release! -

Re: In a jam
Sat, March 17, 2007 - 5:22 PMI wondered who did it originally. I heard it like 20 years ago and it cracked me up. I don't play it often, but if the crowd's in the right mood, it goes over big. -

Re: In a jam
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 9:20 AMAnother fun one is Purple Haze and Green Acres. What's different about this one, and even more eerie, is that it works both ways. IOW, the words to PH fit the melody to GA and vice versa. I pull that one out at the beach on my Ovation and it always pleases. -

Re: In a jam
Mon, March 19, 2007 - 9:23 AMDayam...just read the Ovation bashing at the beginning of the thread. Yeah, berry berry bright on the high end, and the faces do *surface* crack. But for $400 they play so much better than other low end accoustics. I really like the neck feel and mine has never let me down in a recording situation (cracks and all).
