Re: hello all, new and looking to expand my knowledge of rippin' acoustic players......
Mon, June 5, 2006 - 4:24 PMI guess my first quesiton would be, what do you mean by "rippin' acoustic players?" Are you particularly interested in their songwriting abilities or their guitar playing talent? I would hardly consider Ani DiFranco to be a top-notch guitar player, anymore than I would consider Leo Kottke to be a deep, introspective writer of lyrics.
That said, you got some listenin' to do:
Leo Kottke
David Bromberg
Doc Watson (keep in mind the guy is blind and all those notes are coming from a PICK. No fingerpicking. Amazing!) Especially good are the albums he made with his son, Merle)
Mississippi John Hurt
Steve Howe (of Yes; I never much liked the band but my GOD this guy can play, especially the acoustic stuff)
Michael Hedges
Adrian Legg
Laurence Juber

Fri, June 16, 2006 - 6:39 AMHi,
I've got some more names for you:
John Fahey - the greatest
Mark Lemhouse
Tihn
John Doan
Terry Robb
Woody Mann
Stefan Grossman
John Renbourn
Peter Lang
Paul Geremia
-all of which can be found on the tribute album to John Fahey: "John Fahey and Friends - Friends of Fahey Tribute" available from Slackertone Records. www.slackertone.com. If you're interested in listening to several different guitar players and their various styles, I'd recommend getting this album to start with.
