My first time playing in front of an audience and I really muffed it! Couldn't get my fingers to move, could have played better if I was sitting on them. Just need a place to sound off. Hope someone is listening. Trial by Fire I guess. Hope everyone doesn't have to go thru this. Practice,Practice,Practice maybe next time I'll wear shades and get a seeing eye dog, the dog will play and I'll hold the donation cup. So everyone Thanks for listening!

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, January 21, 2006 - 12:46 AM*hug* Everyone slips, my friend. It is NO indication of who we are, or who we can be. I am a performer (belly dancer), and I have had my shares of utter humiliation on stage. And still, I make a very happy and successful living at what I do.
Keep on keepin' on, I always say. My worst day doing what I love is 100X better than my best day doing what doesn't inspire me in the least,
Be well.

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, January 21, 2006 - 8:11 AMPlaying in front of others is a different skill then playing by yourslef, and has just as much of learning curve as playing in a band vs playing solo. Don't sweat it. Everyone sound like that the first time.
I dont really like playing on stage (usually I play by myself or at house partis or with friends), but when I do get up on stage I intentionaly play it "safe". To me that means that whatever I play is the stuff I am 100% sure I have down. This can be tough for me because i am always more excited about the stuff I just learned or the song I just wrote. By the time I have that down Ill be excited about the next thing... and so it goes.. so I usually pick out what I am going to do a week or so ahead of time and practive the sh*t out of it. Something I remembered reading about playing on stage:
Practice each song start to finish. Dont stop when you mess up, because you cant stop on stage and start over. Also it will teach you to deal with a suddenly out of tune string (play around it) , sudden urge to sneeze and all the real-life stuff that can happen on stage.
If you have a short set keep re tunings to a minimum. (ie I have some songs I like to play in Drop D, I always play them last so I can tune (down) once. Or have two guitars.
Once youu determine a set, practice the whole set in order. Even the Greatful Dead started with set lists.
Change your strings 1-2 days before the set so they can stratch in. Arrive early enough to let the guitar acclimate to the venue (taking the guitar out of the case speeds this process up- but never leave a guitar in an open or unlatched case- someone will pick up the case thinking its latched and the gutar will fall out. Been there done that...) The day of. make sure you have everything that you need (Including spare strings, picks, slides, capos) in your case. Just double checking and knowing its all there will make you feel better.
Be careful how much you drink. Lots of venues are bars, and if you have second set then the temptation to drink all night is there. Unless you play well drunk (I don't), watch your intake (I usually drink a beer and then sip the second one till I play). -

That's no fun at all! I agree with the the rest of what you say, but until you get up there and just let it go and quit worring about being perfect, you can't express yourself on stage. This is an ART not a horse race. Most of the mistakes that you notice, no one else does! Maybe your band mates might pick up on it, but they do it too. Take a deep breath, remind yourself that you're doing this because you love it, and just have fun. Trust me, no one in the crowd is listening to you as closely as you think. -

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Sat, January 21, 2006 - 7:31 PMI agree it isnt a horse race, but I still think that plating something you just learned is a good way to look foolish (ie Bob Weir learning to play slide on stage- bad idea). Once you have something down, and you feel comfortable expressing yourself within the song, then you have it down. I dont mean play stiff i mean know the song, know the pauses and the voicings and where to breath. I have songs that I can play and play with, and I also have songs that I am writing, or just written and dont like the chorus or think the second verse is too long. Given a choice Ill play the song that I know. Thats what I am saying.
Also I was thinking playing solo, which has the added challenge of not having a band to cover in the event of a F/U.
In my own expierence, there are songs that I have forgotten but can remember from time to time, songs that are current in my mind and songs that I am just getting the hang of. I wouldnt be comfortable playing a work in progress in public.

"Hey they were all stoned or drunk anyway." That's what we used to tell each other.

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Sun, January 22, 2006 - 4:33 PMConsole yourself with the fact that as long as you didn't do something unforgettable (like take your pants down and pee on the audience), nobody will remember your performance, and 90% of them forgot about it the moment you left the stage. Also, remember: it was YOU up there. Which means that even if you really stank, you probably still played better than 99% of the audience and they were probably not that conscious of your mistakes.
I write and perform funny songs. There are nights when I go over like gangbusters and nights when the audience seems hell-bent on not having a good time. This just makes me more inspired to go out and get 'em the next time. You do that, too.

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Sun, January 22, 2006 - 4:52 PMYea, there's nothing like that quite sound or the single clap in a crowded bar to make you feel wanted. The thing to remember is, they're not there to see you. Unless you pass out, cry, or piss everybody off, it's no big deal.
The stage is no place to learn new songs or practice, but if you perform enough, you realize you don't have to be perfect. I can't tell you how many times I have forgotten lyrics or chords and just faked it, and no one noticed. Hell, I've sung the 3rd verse 2nd, left out the 4th, sang the chours twice while tring to remember the next verse, covered for the lead player because he frozen with fear and gave me that "you take it look" and it always came out good.
Just never ever, ever, act like you messed up. Always smile and act like your having the time of your life. Don't stop the song and start over. Play through it! Pretty soon it just falls in place. I once got a Fifty Dollar Bill stuffed in my pocket for playing Stormy Monday on request, and I butchered it! -

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, February 2, 2006 - 9:05 AMjust like hum said, thats what its all about.
I've passed out on stage and woken up in a drumkit, I've fallen offstage from singing with my eyes closed, had to change strings during songs, it basically never gets easy but its generally so much fun it doesnt matter.
pick a song youre confident with to start, something not too intricate ,chordstrummy-based is probably best. After you get the first one out of the way and it seems a hell of a lot easier.

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, February 2, 2006 - 9:53 AMAh scary memories!
I remember playing a house party back in college, and completely spacing and repeating the first verse again, and then crumbling like a mud wall in a rainstorm.
I've come a long way since my "Oh shit!"/fall apart days. I mess up all the freakin' time! But hum has got it right--never let them see the "Oh shit!" Just smile (outwardly or inwardly) and keep going like it is just what you meant to do. LOL -

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, February 2, 2006 - 10:03 AMIf you listen to James Brown you'll keep hearing "I gotcha'" throughout live performances. Theyre letting the musicians know that they heard the bum notes or missed a note or whatever and that they'll get the usual fine.
When Ray said "thats alright" during some songs he was letting someone off the hook from the fine.
Everyone makes mistakes

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, February 3, 2006 - 12:21 PMFrank Zappa was NOTORIOUS for fining his musicians if they didn't play his complicated music correctly. And God have mercy on your soul if Zappa heard you play the same thing during an improvisation that he'd heard you play before at a different show. He actually fired Jean-Luc Ponty for doing that.
He even referred to one of his touring groups as "The Band That Never Gets Anything Right..."
Tough boss!

Re: Played like Shit!!!!!!!!!!
Fri, February 3, 2006 - 12:27 PMYea, Frank thought very highly of himself. Most of the brilliant ones do. Us mere mortals somehow just piss 'em of with our imperfections. -

Sat, February 4, 2006 - 7:00 AMperfectionism is highly over rated. chaos can be a great creative resource....and man all this talk of frank, i really miss the frankster, i would love to hear his take on the current polictical scene....it's funny with all the perfectionism he put into composing and the band when he played gutar solos it was all id, ya know just gut level intensity....
