I've heard many different things regarding differences, preferences, etc. I at first thought there was no real substantial difference, but now I'm personally finding that dreadnaughts really are a little louder & have a bit more sustain. I don't really see the attraction for jumbo style acoustics (except many female guitarists have told me that the jumbo cutaway style is much more "boob-friendly" than the dreadnaught cutaway lol!") at all. Any thoughts?
Also I've always thought a miniture resonator guitar would be a great idea. You have the convenience of a miniture guitar, but you still have an instrument that projects really well. Neither Dobro or National have answered my queries regarding miniture guitars, custom orders in general etc . Assholes.
Anyway I guess I'll be patient and let you know if/when I hear from the fuckers.

Re: Dreadnaught Vs. Jumbo Style?
Fri, September 22, 2006 - 12:59 PMI have a Laravee dread and it's my baby. Not having boobs I can't speak for that. But I LOVE the sound of my Laravee. And I play upside down! When real people play it normally it sounds even better...

Re: Dreadnaught Vs. Jumbo Style?
Mon, September 25, 2006 - 8:43 AMI guess for acoustic guitars the most important thing for me is if it (of course) is well constructed and it has a solid top (bookmatched or not). -

Re: Dreadnaught Vs. Jumbo Style?
Thu, November 2, 2006 - 7:55 PMI'll chime in, rather late 'cause I'm new here, that it's not really about loudness in the dread vs. jumbo debate.
The materials used and the shape of the body will create the tone of a guitar, while the bracing and construction create loudness.
Jumbos typically have huge low end, created in their much larger lower bout. Highs & upper mids are created in the shoulder area of the guitar, again probably more accented with a jumbo's curvy shape and wider shoulders. Midrange, to simplify, just kinda happens between the two, but a lack of mids opens up frequencies for the human voice to occupy - hence so many famous singer-songwriters being absolutely in love with their guitars - their voice fits the space not booming from their axes.
No time to discuss tonewoods, but I will mention bracing and construction. The reason Martins, Taylors, and other fine guitars boom out the noise is their impeccable interior bracing. it holds the front, back, and sides together while allowing it to reverberate harmoniously.
Hope I didn't sound too know-it-all, but I'm a self-admitted TOTAL GUITAR SLUT - sorry, *ahem* collector, and I could babble about them forever. That's why I'm good at my job!

Re: Dreadnaught Vs. Jumbo Style?
Fri, November 3, 2006 - 9:06 AMI think it's interesting that you mention the human voice....
I think that the acoustic guitar is primarly a vocalist backup instrument - especially in contemporary music.
Most people don't know that the acoustic guitar wasn't even that popular, or widely played - even as early as the beginning of the 20th century. In the early 1900s banjo & mandolin were the stringed instruments of the day. The electric guitar is even younger at about half a century or so. Give or take a few years (the origins of the first electric guitar is still being hotly debated)....
Okay you're right.....this could go on ad infintinum! LOL! -
