Having a blast with my guitar lessons, ive had two so far and im amazed at my progress in just the two lessons, my teacher is really awesome, and highly encoureging... all my three guitars are steel strings and i have no problem tuning them up.
However, this weekend while at my sisters, she has a guitar with 3 steel strings and 3 nylon strings, i tried to tune it up because it was in desparate need of a good tuning, i had no problem with strings 4,5,6 as they are the steel ones, but strings 1,2,3 are nylon and would not tune up no matter what i did, i finally gave up, and i learned in the process that i dont like the feel of nylon strings.
was wondering if anyone knows if there is something unique in the tuning of nylong strings?

Re: Nylon Strings.
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 11:10 AMYeah ....well I tried to share what i know about this last month and there was no responce ,but for a tribesman.First lets get it straight. nylon and 'gut' strings(silver or silver plated bronze wrapt around silk) they kinda look like steel but arn't.these strings are for classical guitars only. and the nylons tone die out after a while[ a few months and they have no tone at all,no tone uhh....no tune!
steel strings belong on dreadknot , jumbos, concert acoustics and electric guitars. If you come accross a guitar thad needs a good tuning ,chances are it needs new strings..........PS you can destroy giutars by using the wrong gage and type of string .....ok then so good luck with that. -

Wed, September 5, 2007 - 2:51 PMThanks Rscott for sharing your knowledge on the guitar strings. i have steel strings on all my own guitars and ive suggested that my sister re-string hers with them as well.
When i was playing around with hers trying to tune it up, i felt like i was playing with a toy,
I just bought an electric guitar the other day, and had a great lesson yesturday with it....its a used one, and needs new strings so im having it restring next week. Its good to know about the proper guage string, thanks for that info.. -

Re: Nylon Strings.
Wed, September 5, 2007 - 2:58 PMPias keep in mind as well that steel strings can be a bit more painful for your fingers - if you have not developed appreciable calluses yet.
Also nylon strings don't project as loudly as steel strings can.
Just a couple of differences to keep in mind...it's a matter of choice, and sometimes what kind of music you are playing.
You wouldn't want to use steel strings if you are learning flamenco rubatas, neither would you want to use nylon strings if you're learning electric rock guitar. -

Wed, September 5, 2007 - 3:07 PMIve been practicing seriously for about a month now and i think thier was a couple of days that my finger tips felt really sore, but thats about it, now they feel really good, like im really doing something. perhaps im one of the lucky ones.
I really dig my accoustic, but my new electric is feeling really good, its nice to work on both....
