Im saving up for a real good quality guitar, and its either going to be a Martin or a Taylor. i must say that i really like the feel of the Taylors ive been trying out in the store. anyone have any pros or cons of the two brands?

Sun, January 13, 2008 - 9:53 PMit depends what you your needs are. in general the martin will give you more punch, midrange, and volume. while Taylors give you more high frequencies and singing harmonic overtones. if you like the sound of dreadnoughts then i would look more at Martins if you like the sound of a Grand Auditorium model then i would look more at Taylors.
but i do want to emphasize that it is best to follow ones ear and take your time and play them all at you local store and try all your friends guitars and pay attention to what kind of guitars your favorite musicians play....try to understand what qualities you are looking for in a guitar.
i would also like to add that you should try to get to a store that carries Guild guitars. when ever i check out acoustics at a store lately i find that i am always very impressed with how good they compare in terms of tone for price then other makes. they seem to have nice sweet highs and deep rich dark lows.
as a Taylor 314-CE owner. (and i have had it for 10 years now) i can tell you they make a damn fine guitar -

Mon, January 14, 2008 - 11:15 AMTaylors project really well (even though I agree - they are tad bit more on the high end, though not as bad as Ovation)
Both can give you severe stickershock. Although the resale value on Martins will always be a bit more competative IMHO.
They are both quality instruments however.

Mon, January 14, 2008 - 4:09 PMThank you guys for your great feedback here, with some much out there on the market, it can be a bit overwhelming to a beginner such as myself. and though im happy with my inexpensive walden, im wanting to save up for a really nice higher quality....
It will mostly be for accompanying my own singing, so that feedback you offered about the tones really makes me more aware when i go in and play them again....
Martins can surely give some stickershock, but this is something that ill be saving up for, -

Tue, January 15, 2008 - 9:00 AMRegardless of what manufacturer you go with....
....I highly recommend you get a solid top acoustic.
Seagull & Ibanez make VERY competatively priced solid top models...and they are quality instruments. -

Re: This on or That one...
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 3:40 PMOh yeah, a solid top is already a must on my search. I have a nice smaller size Ibanez, but its bright blue, my new one will be more on the natural side...
Its going to be solid top, acoustic/electric with a cut out -

Re: This on or That one...
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 6:57 PMWell, the choices are bewildering, are they not? I confess I have a strong leaning toward Taylors, and a similar one away from Martins (you can PM me if you wish on the latter) --- but for midlevel guitars, I suggest taking a good look at the Larivees and the Breedlove Atlas line. If you like cutaways, you might also take a look at Wechters. OK OK I confess that Abe Wechter is a friend of mine, and though I do not own any Wechters (yet), both the Breedlove and Wechter import lines are well worth a look.
In general, don't buy it unless you have played it.....I mean that EXACT guitar. But I violated my own rules and bought a Breedlove Atlas jumbo (their Korean import) sight unseen last year, and it turned out to be a very solid axe , Fishman electronics built in, very good sounding, pub-resistant, and fairly easy to play. There are a coupla warts but not major.
I have also heard a Larivee which was an "off the rack" piece, which rivals my $3K Taylor limited edition in sound quality.
You should be able to get a very decent guitar once you get past the 500 buck range, and there are a lot of very good used ones out there for less. Pick it up, play it. You never can tell when you will fall in love.
Enjoy your exploration!
