Sun, September 23, 2007 - 5:29 PMThanks Hum for the imput, you think you will ever go out on gigs again? Been working on some meterial this evening, and chord progressions. man is it easy to get lost in the playing...pretty nice amp you got there in your pics.... -

Re: One Man Gigs
Sun, September 23, 2007 - 10:33 PMIt would take a LOT of practice to get me out again, but I do think about it now and then. The amp is a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Yes, I love the blues. When I did my solo gigs I kept it strictly acuostic. I had a cheap assed PA. But it did the trick.

Sun, September 23, 2007 - 10:47 PMGo for it. They tend to be very supportive and you will meet other musos that your can share your passion and ideas with. I play at them quite often. If you would like to hear some of my songs, please go to www.myspace.com/luigicappel. If you also have a MySpace page, send me an invite and I'll come listen:) -

Re: One Man Gigs
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 8:27 AMThat's all I do anymore.... its outstanding. You do whatever you want... you want to take a verse longer or cut the instrumental section of your tunes, you do it.
I would also recommend getting a phrase sampler if you plan to do this more often - it'll open you to a new world!
Break a leg!

Re: One Man Gigs
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 10:31 AMMake sure it's the right venue for you .Sleepy joes are great if their the local bohiemian.Star bucks SUXXX and any place like this is going to be a pain in the ass and uncomfortable. You have to think about the people listening ,If they use milk, caramel, cinnimmon and sugar in their coffee they prob don't know squat about music, which means they will pipe up if you don't nail current top 40,with All 4 over dubed guitar trax vocals and whatever.Belive me stay away from these gigs their just full of shit and no fun.Your first one man gigs or open mikes should be at place you know with freinds in the crowd.Do this untill you forget about people and you hit your zone once your in the zone no venue can stop you! I say give it a shot ! Knock'm dead! Break a leg ! and let us know how it goes good luck! -

Re: One Man Gigs
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 10:47 AMI would have to agree with rscott. Mainstream crowds can be tough. If it's the kind of place where one might find a local poetry reading night, then you should be fine. But beware of suburban strip mall soccer moms and their corporate clone hubbies.

Re: One Man Gigs
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 1:44 PMI sure appreciate the great and honest feedback from you all, the place with open mic here in town, is a really cool little eclectic coffee house, very small, and they feature loads of musicians, the people who frequent the place seem really laid back and are often reading, journaling, sharing a game of chess or just mingling and talking music.it has really cool vibes and its definately not the Star Bucks kind of joint for sure....i might go check it out tonight as its open mic on Mondays, but i wont play just yet, i still have to work out some of my songs and clean up my chords....
thanks for all the encouregement. it certainly has fueled my desire more.....

Re: One Man Gigs
Mon, September 24, 2007 - 2:29 PMI do it all the time! Coffee houses are a great place to work your chops. I ran an open stage for nine years and the music was always great.

Re: One Man Gigs
Fri, September 28, 2007 - 8:01 PMone thing to note is that if you are nervous your vocal cords tighten up and the low end of your voice disappears so try to stay calm and remember to breath.
my biggest problem is forgetting the words... you'd think that since i wrote the stupid song and have played it a million times i'd know the freak'in words already.
oh and if anyone is interested www.myspace.com/paranormaltestpilot -

YOU WOULD THINK!!!! LOL
How about this, I get the verses mixxed up, sing 2nd 1st, 3rd 2nd and finish with the 1st. This is why we drink on stage. -

Mon, October 15, 2007 - 9:22 AMThere is no practice like playing a set in front of a crowd. I did it for years @ open mic, & now i host it! -

Re: One Man Gigs
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 8:42 PMI agree, playing at open mikes is great practice and you never know who you will meet or what opportunities open up.
I still play some Open Mikes although I'm getting a few named gigs as well, such as at the PR Bar in Ponsonby on Thursday night. Details on my MySpace page www.myspace.com/luigicappel.
If you have access to a local gig guide, or someone has an Open Mike website such as Karen Temple's awesome site for New Zealand at www.temmple.co.nz, check out what's going and try a few. Some Open Mikes are new and have a small following which means you get to sing more songs to a smaller audience, while others are highly professional and you have to be good to get on the long list. You'll probably find some that are focussed on the type of music you play which is also important. You don't want to end up at a Death Metal Open Mike if you play country ballads.
The other rgeat thing with Open Mikes, especially the good ones, is making friends with some great muso's and you never know what that can lead to. -
