An acoustic does work well through an electric amp, but the richness of the instrument is somewhat lost. After many tests, & for my purposes, I think an acoustic amp w/ a 12" speaker best projects the tone, distorted or not.

So far the Genz Benz Shenendoh line has worked the best....

so, whaddya think? I've been able to get some pretty rockin' tones by plugging an acoustic, especially my 12-string detuned to C#sus4 with a soundhole pickup, into an amp with distortion. It's good for recording, if you can control the feedback! I've seen a number of players do this live, and some sound better than others. I do a couple of songs in my performance where I split the signal between distortion and clean to give a 2-guitar sound, and one sound clarifies and compliments the other quite well too.
