i just wondered what your story is and how you got back to playing again.
i am dealing with both. now its more so nerve damage and tendonitis. i have not played in 3 years because of this. every time i do it starts to hurt. so i am afraid to push it. its getting better this year i actually got my strength back...its just such a bummer to put down something totally when you have been totally immersed in it for over 10 years.(music over 20 i started when i was 4/5 so its like breathing to me. adding to my disdain for this injury) its in my left hand (fret brd) i thought about switching hands and buying a lefty....but i really miss my acoustic electric gibson with the cut out... and even with picking...my fingers are still learning to grip accurately and tightly. sometimes even the proper arch for a piano can bug me. bleakkkkkk
message me if you dont feel like blabbing on here.

Re: anyone here deal with tendonitis/ganglion cyst and returned to playing?
Thu, April 13, 2006 - 6:12 PMNot sure which hand is afflicted (both?) but have you thought about playing slide? You don't have to grip the neck as much, and once you're tuned to the open chord, your fingers on your chording hand are pretty much done. Plus, your other hand is picking, not plucking.
Just a thought.

Re: anyone here deal with tendonitis/ganglion cyst and returned to playing?
Thu, April 13, 2006 - 6:47 PMI had a friend who came down with ferocious RSI in his frethand. It took him three years of P/T and meds and playing for maybe 20 minutes a day to get back up on the horse.
However: he used his time pretty wisely, worked on his ear-training and theory, and when it came time to pick up again, he was very rigorous about correct posture and technique. He's out of the woods now, but still extremely disciplined.

Re: anyone here deal with tendonitis/ganglion cyst and returned to playing?
Sat, April 15, 2006 - 4:21 PMHad a ganglion cyst on the top of my right wrist "aspirated" with the largest bore needle I ever hope to see stickin' out of me. The fluid in the cyst was really more like a thick, clear gel. However, it was successfully dealt with, without the stress of surgery, no scar, and it never came back!
Cyst used to keep me from plucking and since I'm Brazilian and don't use a pick, I was afraid it would affect my playing for life. Now I play almost every day, no discomfort, no pain.
Don't know if this would work for you, but thought I would share the experience.
Good luck and good health to you!

Re: anyone here deal with tendonitis/ganglion cyst and returned to playing?
Mon, April 17, 2006 - 4:14 AMdon't know about cyst but as far as tendonitis, i had carpul tunnel and couldn't play hardly at all for 5years then i had play a limited amount for another 3 years, just up to the point when i knew it was about to tweek. thats the key , don't tweek it, each time you do it sets you back because a cycle of inflamation starts up that perpetuates more inflamation. if you don't have an electric guitar borrow or buy one and put extra light strings on and try to play just under the threshold......best of luck to you* -

Re: anyone here deal with tendonitis/ganglion cyst and returned to playing?
Mon, April 17, 2006 - 4:27 AMthanks for all the positive responses.
trying not to tweak it is sooooooooo hard. i used to be addicted to just sitting there and playing scales for hours to see how fast i could do a scale.
i always go extra light (easy on the neck and i like the soft sound)
my acoustic gibson is almost as soft as an electric...almost. but i have an electric here too.....now i cant wait to put on new strings and try it again.
did you notice that if you took it to tweek level it actually helped your wrist regain strength and kinda help get it back to normal?

Re: anyone here deal with tendonitis/ganglion cyst and returned to playing?
Mon, April 17, 2006 - 7:05 AMI don't know what ganglion cyst is however I'll offer this ( entirely ancedotal information) about tendonitis and carpal tunnel.
Years ago these things were non existant. Yer repetitive stress was the only way anything got done. This was true from cotton picking to vegatable harvesting to machine ship tool operation to typing - to well - you name it - it was all repetitive stress and the work was always much more physically difficult than it is today.
We haven't evolved into a creature that is more suseptable to these ailments instead we pre-dispose outselves to them because we are so physically weak. Even the super huge body builder of today wouldn't stand a prayer in a contest against the old fashioned farm hand so long as it wasn't simply lifting a bar bell. The farm hand would have had more thourough all over body development of deeper redder stronger muscle tissue that would out run, out work, and out last the body builder any day, all day.
I had carpal tunnel so bad that I couldn't move my wrists or make a fist. I did this to myself.
I got a squeezie ball and gently slowley over a period of months tweaked my muscles back into shape. The carpal tunnel went away and never came back.
One thing I did not do was squeeze the ball hard. I was very gentle but constant all day tweaking that squeezie ball. I went through two of 'em.
I suggest that possibly picking ut the guitar may be too much stress and merely serve to make things worse and that first you might try and build up your muscle tissue over a period of months and then see about that fretboard.

Mon, April 17, 2006 - 8:58 AMglad the squeezy thing works....my ghetto version is four socks folded up into a ball. haa haa. it actually does work great for getting back the strength. i also was told it was carpal tunnel...
and oh...that needle....oh yehhhhhhhhhhhhh....totally staying away from that....i watched a surgery on removal...asgahsgdhagsdhgasdgha. i prefer the take time off of work/cleansing/therapy/diet method.
oh the gross sacks of joint fluid....it looked like mutated chicken fat. blahhhh
i think diet had a big part in setting me up for this too. i ate like crap and was not getting my Bs (essential for joint/tendon/nerve health)

ganglion cyst
Thu, April 20, 2006 - 5:44 AMHave you thought about doing the bible thump on it?
I had one years ago, had cortazone shot in it, and they tried to lance it, but it kept coming back. One night I got good a drunk, and well decided I had enough of it, and just kept smacking my wrist aganist a wall until it was no more. i
t did hurt like hell for about an hour, but I have had no problem since then.
just a thought. -

Re: ganglion cyst
Thu, April 20, 2006 - 2:25 PMactually you are lucky you didnt mess yourself up with that. you can actually break your wrist pretty easily doing that or get an infection or do nerve damage. i KNOW thats what would of happened if i tried it. also mine was a bunch of them i think.
and deep within the wrist bone. it actually stretched my wrist bones apart from the inside and went all the way through from top to bottom...and yes...that hurts like a s.o.b.
on a positive note though. i was able to put new strings on yesterday and wind them by hand without problem. and no pain today. i also played for five minutes.

Thu, April 20, 2006 - 3:25 PMHave you tried whiskey? Just kidding, but it worked for me. Glad to hear you're doing better. The older I get the more I find that when I quit something it's hard to get back into it. So keep plugging away and hopefully you can be pain free soon.

Mon, May 8, 2006 - 12:36 PMthanks all!
i just wanted to say i have been able to play for 5 minutes everyday without remaining pain. i stop everytime i feel the pain and massage the whole arm, hand and wrist. i quit for the day and am fine the next day.
and i could play a b minor! (not full bar but classic) ahhhhhhhhhhhhh b minor...i love it! before stupid power chords were impossible. 1 minute or less of playing went really shitty and sloppy. i did pentatonic scales for 5 minutes strait yesterday. i am freaking out happy about that. no flubs or rubber fingers either. ahhahha YESSSSSSSS!

Slide, That's right Slide
Mon, May 8, 2006 - 1:57 PMApologies if I didn't read the clomn.
I'm sorry about your injury.
I suffer from inflamed tendons and a play very little because of it.
I also play flute, which creates onother stress on thosem tendons.
I found lap steel slide guitar as a way to play without messing up that left hand which i pushed so hard in my youth.
I'm an unusual case.
My left hand is aflicted from a youthful injury.
But a well tuned eight string Has a lot of posibilities
if your right hand still has the advantage.
Pedal Steel ;The table style, is often equipt with eleven strings.
A lot of possibilities exist for the instrument beyond the country and hawaiian streotypes. -

Mon, May 8, 2006 - 2:28 PMdont take tylenol for it.
a couple things i found helpful for swelling:
tart cherry juice
st.johns wort (i got it from herb pharm.they have a topical spray too)
massage
proper hydration
b vitamins are ESSENTIAL to tendon health.
try some of that out. goodluck! -

Remedies
Mon, May 8, 2006 - 8:27 PMArnica in the form of a gell of a cream can be effective. There's a homeopathic arnica as well.
Tiger Balm, and that minty "Blue Ice," gel also offer some relief.
The Hydration issue is surprisingly important.
No NSAIDs. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Arnica.
Tue, May 9, 2006 - 9:43 PMI have only encountered the homeopathic arnica and the topical gel stuff.
I seldom use homepathics but i know a Carpenter / Horseman who uses the stuff on himself and his animals.
The herb was a key ingredient in a salve that he used for the Horses legs. After applying it he noticed that the swelling went down in his hands.
If you are taking iternally then It better be Homepathic. the herb itself can damage your liver, and the salve may cause irritation if the skin is broken
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arnica_montana
There is some note of this in the above article.
My homeopath friends also recomend Disolving the pils in water to create a tincture.
you'd have to ask about that. it takes some of the fun out of the taste.
I find the gel works wonders on bruises and sprains.
Homeopathy works for som not others.
Don't actually eat any signifigant amount of the herb itself.
