Sometimes i feel as if im the only beginner out there, while im surrounded by so many proficient players... Yesturday, i was browsing my favorite music store and my friend who works there was tuning up a small bright purple glittery guitar for a young girl, whos parents where supporting her desire to learn and play, while their young boy was getting a Drum set...it always makes me feel good to see supportive parents who encourege there kids from early on to explore music.
Anyway, the Father is going to be teaching his Daughter to play, and i was blown away when he was playing her guitar... WOW, such sound, i suddenly felt a bit envious,as im only beginning on my first major scale and still working the chords into muscle memory.. i was feeling and asking myself, if i will ever get to that stage in my playing.... sometimes i can get ahead of myself and loose track of the momment and realize that im learning for pleasure and with a passion for the guitar, so i guess i should take times like these as inspirations and not allow myself to feel so down on my own beginning level....
sorry for rambling on....

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Tue, October 2, 2007 - 8:00 PMDude , Everyone feels that way when they here someone else .You have to take what you can and make it your own no mater what. You do what you do your way and no one else can do that.Aftere awile people will say "man you rock"and your reply will be" What ?"Then you open your heart and play, with no regard but shut the fuck up I'm play'n here.Others like you will 'say good job"and thats when you realize hey Im' not the best but I can rock and be myself .In doing this you become the artist creating .You become yourself the artist and know one can make that F# wail like that but you . I don't know if that made any sense . Don't sweat it just friken play.........Oh yeah theres a 16yr old in sanbernedino that transcribes for Frank Zappa. -

Wed, October 3, 2007 - 10:03 PMAll of sucked in the beginning.
Devotion to your instrument, daily practice, and being able sustain through the first difficult years and painful fingers seperates the casual "hobbyist" from a full fledged "musician".
But both have fun. -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 4:22 PMJust last week, i worked on and was introduced to some really great rhythm strumming on the guitar, and WOW!... is it tricky to play and keep a specific rhythm and sing at the same time.....will take some more practice, but what a difference its been in learning this last week.
Like another piece of the guitar puzzle joining together. -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 4:58 PMYeah, I've found that my rhythm improves drastically when I put the vocals aside and don't think about them for a bit. Then again, you really need to think of your voice as another instrument, maybe just add it a little later on.
Peace............. -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Wed, October 31, 2007 - 5:32 PMYeah, thats what ive decided to do, set the voice aside untill i get the rhythms into muscle memory so i dont have to really think about them.......
Learning these Rhythms this past week, really made me see just how sloppy my strumming was. What a difference, sounding pretty good... -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Sat, November 10, 2007 - 11:21 AMyeah just keep going back and forth getting better at each aspect so when you bring them together you gradually gain more control of the whole thing. i didn't learn this the right way i just wrote songs where i sang and played the same thing and when that got boring i gradually made then different enough to be interesting. -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 10:40 AMRemember how much fun it is to play music, and how lucky you are that you've stuck with it as long as you have.
My problem when I was a "beginner" was that I overthought it. -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

Could not have put it any better.
You will probably never be a rock star, be heard on the radio or play in a stadium. No matter how good you get, there will be some 10 year old kid on Youtube that can play circles around you.
Just keep learning and always keep it fun. Don't be afraid play different styles and always be patient with yourself. Remember, it's called "playing".
Peace

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 4:09 PMThanks Guys...i vowed when i began lessons that it would only be fun and i didnt want it to feel like work.... the occassional frustration, and feeling of if ill ever get to that stage of keeping steady rhythm and quick smooth chord changes,, its all coming slowly and im cool with that...
my goal is to be able to play through some songs, to play for fun in a coffee house,.just to entertain others and have fun myself in doing so... -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 4:17 PMI just thought of this. I used to play along to records and it really helped me with my timing and tempo. I still do this today. -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 4:21 PMive thought about that,, how do you figure out the chords... -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 4:37 PMfirst, play to songs that you have a chance to play to in the first place. Start simple. I tell all beginers to go get one of those song books that have at least 5 songs you like and learn the chords. What you will find out after a few songs is, there's only about three or four chords in any given song and they're not that hard.
Then just start playing along. You don't have to sound good at first or even be able to keep up with the record, it will just be fun to hear yourself that way.
You can get tabs off the internet, but they are getting harder to get these days. I would start learning to read tabs asap. Again, go at your own pace and just have some fun with it. -

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 4:43 PMim gonna give that a try, i got some book with the songs on Cd. so that will work out... some tabs ive found on the internet can be confusing for a beginner, i can real some simple ones, but im slow at it at this point..
youd make a good teacher....

Re: Strumming Ahead...
Mon, November 12, 2007 - 4:43 PMA few more things. I know people that have been playing for ten years or more, and they suck and will always suck. I have known people that just picked up a guitar and took off. Don't worry about it. U B U!
Also, check out Youtube!!! Man I wish that was around back in the dark ages when I started. Just search for "guitar lessons" and that will keep you busy for a while.
Rock on!!

Thu, November 15, 2007 - 3:41 PM<<I used to play along to records and it really helped me with my timing and tempo>>
....even better: a metronome or (in the studio) click-track.
It feels akward at first , but it really helps your rhythm, timing/syncopation.
