Tue, May 30, 2006 - 10:02 PMAgreed. If you watch any of the copious video that exists of RIchie you can see that he uses his enormous hands to barre most of what he's playing, similar to slide.

Huge hands
Fri, June 2, 2006 - 4:32 PMI've watched him play up close a few times. He keeps tempo with his hands (and voice,)
right hand up down all the time. He swipes the strings, digging deeper at the area where he he wants emphasis. It looks really muscular and automatic.
His strumming is a lot like Funk Players althought with a different rythm and chord pattern.
It's like he is playing the High Hat tempo of the song. the Up Down of it suffuses everything in chordal musicality.
Use chord tunings like Dropping E,e to D.d...where you can play two or three chords without moving he barre

Mon, June 26, 2006 - 9:10 AMA lot of his rhythms are from his playing conga drums prior to guitar...study conga rhythms and you find a lot of what you seek. -

Re: Richie Havens's strumming patterns ??????
Fri, November 3, 2006 - 7:15 PMOld thread, but hey, I'm new here.
Firstly, Ritchie Havens has absolutely HUGE, GIGANTIC HANDS. His thumb can wrap the neck of the guitar, and hang off the fretboard a few inches. Having an extra finger must be handy....
Second, his strumming patterns are very much influenced by conga & percussion patterns, as written above. And, he plays the f***in' crap out of his guitar like no other. His guitar tech, when I saw him, had to race to keep 3 Guilds restrung, and the tops on the 2 older guitars were almost worn through.
One of the most aggressive acoustic players ever, for sure.
