Anyone try to make a guitar themselves? I've looked online, and there are a lot of good articles on it, and I was just wondering if anyone has tried before.

Re: Build a guitar
Fri, February 9, 2007 - 1:28 PMYes, but not an acoustic, an electric. It was a really fun project and it turned out pretty good. It was no Fender or Gibson but still very playable.
The hardest part about it (IMO) was getting the action just right. -

Wed, March 21, 2007 - 10:47 AMHi Folks:
I just pick up this book Guitar An American Life by Tim Brookes. I just started reading it but it a book on Tims search for guitars and that
includes acoustic guitars. What I read it a good book, it will give you a good idea on how acoustic guitar are made and the history of guitars in America. Also before trying to make a acoustic guitar try repairing one that a good start .

Re: Build a guitar
Wed, March 21, 2007 - 11:34 AMI have a couple of friends that are luthiers, one of which builds high end flamenco guitars. FWICG, as long as you know your way around woodwork you can build a guitar, but to build a gorgous guitar is one of those things that takes a lot of practice. It sounds like a fun project, so perhaps you should just do it as such and use it as a learning experience. -

Re: Build a guitar
Mon, March 26, 2007 - 11:28 AMIn the early years, 80's, I worked in a few shops and the most important thing I found when building (electric or acoustic )is well aged or seasond wood.Instrument quality wood is very hard to find and if you do you can spend a lot on just plank wood , like say 1000"s or more depending on what you want. Then you have to have the tools, time and talent to pull it off! It can be done very well, but like everything ,it gets better with practice.Personaly I've only built electrics,(leave the acoustics to the pros)some came out great and early ones like stumps with strings I'd suggest peice building at first or using a kit, this will give you good basic knowhow and is worth the money,Unless you really screw it up your homegrown will play quite well, the finish may look like ass but it'll play!
